In my ECMP 355 Class, I am to think about ideas of digital citizenship as it relates to my future classroom and blog about it. Here are a few questions that were asked and will be answering to the best of my knowledge:
- What do you see as the major challenges around teaching digital citizenship in the classroom?
- How do you see digital citizenship fitting into the curriculum?
- What topics that we discussed were particularly interesting to you and why?
First, some major challenges around teaching digital citizenship in the classroom are teaching about responsibility and the use of technology. We need to teach them about the safety and precautions of using technology in a classroom and outside of the classroom. Here is a video that I found very powerful when it comes to some problems in teaching digital citizenship: Top 3 challenges of teaching digital
Second, I see digital citizenship fitting in the curriculum within the subject of health and wellness. Teaching students about the effects it does to our brains when one is constantly on the web. This also leads to the well-being of the individual mentally, physically and emotionally.
Thirdly, the topic that interests me during our ECMP 355 class was the cyberbullying topic. This leads to sexual predator’s, bullying and harassment, cyber stalking, the loss of privacy being broadcasted through the internet. This is a scary thought and should be taught in the schools because we see this happening more now than it did more than 40 years ago.
